  • What is Shibumi? This may help....

The following excerpt is from Shibumi by Trevanian. Published The Ballantine Books, New York. Copyright © 1979 by Trevanian. ISBN 0-345-31180-9

“. . . Tell me, Nikko. Will you miss Shanghai?”
Nicholai considered for a second. “No.”

“Will you feel lonely in Japan?”

Nicholai considered for a second. “Yes.”

    “I shall write to you.”

    “Often?”

“No, not often. Once a month. But you must write to me as often as you feel the need to. Perhaps you will be less lonely than you fear. There are other young people studying with Otake-san. And when you have doubts, ideas, questions, you will find Otake-san a valuable person to discuss them with. He will listen with interest, but will not burden you with advice.” The General smiled. “Although I think you may find one of my friend’s habits of speech a little disconcerting at times. He speaks of everything in terms of Go. All of life, for him, is a simplified paradigm of Go".

“He sounds as though I shall like him, sir.”

“I am sure you will. He is a man who has all my respect. He possesses a quality of . . . how to express it? . . . of shibumi.”

“Shibumi, sir?” Nicholai knew the word, but only as it applied to gardens or architecture, where it connoted an understated beauty. “How are you using the term, sir?”

“Oh, vaguely. And incorrectly, I suspect. A blundering attempt to describe an ineffable quality. As you know, shibumi has to do with great refinement underlying commonplace appearances. It is a statement so correct that it does not have to be bold, so poignant it does not have to be pretty, so true it does not have to be real. Shibumi is understanding, rather than knowledge. Eloquent silence. In demeanor, it is modesty without pudency. In art, where the spirit of shibumi takes the form of sabi, it is elegant simplicity, articulate brevity. In philosophy, where shibumi emerges as wabi, it is spiritual tranquility that is not passive; it is being without the angst of becoming. And in the personality of a man, it is . . . how does one say it? Authority without domination? Something like that.”

Nicholai’s imagination was galvanized by the concept of shibumi. No other ideal had ever touched him so. “How does one achieve this shibumi, sir?”

“One does not achieve it, one . . . discovers it. And only a few men of infinite refinement ever do that. Men like my friend Otake-san.”

“Meaning that one must learn a great deal to arrive at shibumi?”

“Meaning, rather, that one must pass through knowledge and arrive at simplicity.”

I read this book for the first time when I was about 15 years old and have reread it many times now. Since then the concept of shibumi has always facinated me.

  • I am Batman!

We have a problem. Bats are coming in the house most nights now. At first we thought it was a little cat Daisy catching them and bringing them through the cat flap, but we realise even she isn't that quick.
We realised what was going on the other night, it was one of those really hot and humid evenings in early July, we went to sleep with the windows open. I woke up about 3am with the really funny noise in the room, couldn't see anything, Rach was comatosed next to me as usual so I switched the light on. I was imediatly dive bombed by this flying mouse!
    Bat!

So I sat up and started taking pics. Rach woke and wondered what the hell I was doing, she thinks I am a nerd anyway! Managed to get some while Rach passed out again!

Eventually the little bugger settled for the night in the curtains, I managed to then get it out of the window.

  • Fathers Day

For fathers day we went down to the wrinklies caravan in Tenby and took Grampy out for a meal in town.Tenby

I think he enjoyed it in the Reef Cafe.Grampy

Some of us enjoyed it more than others!!!The Poo!

Afterwards we all walked back along the North Cliff and it was just a lovely end to the evening. The two poo's!

  • St Fagans

On a recent trip to my parents in Cardiff we all visited St Fagans museum of welsh life. The kids thoroughly enjoyed it, so did Rach!, especially the pot throwing!Rach throwing!

It was just so nice to walk around somewhere with no amusements, no chippies etc. I was surprised just how much the kids enjoyed it, they liked the ride on the horse and cart!Ellie & Tom with cart horse

If you are wondering where the poo was while all this was going on, then she was at home with her Gran and Grampy playing in the garden.Poo with daisy

Everybody was happy when we got home!
    Home!

  • Newquay

Still sitting here trying to set this thing up, was just day dreaming about the family trip to Newquay on the weekend. It's going to be Cerys' first birthday and we aim to celebrate it on the beach at Crantock! All are welcome, we will be up by the Gannel with a huge wind break corral, all the gear will be with us for a cool weekend of playing in the water, just hope there is surf and maybe some sun.
Hopefully we will get down there by about 8.30 Saturday morning, going to leave at 4am to miss the traffic and have a full day there. My wrinklies (parents) and Rachels are already there staying in satatics and tourer, Rach's sister is also going with her fiance and step kids to be, so will be a gang of us!
Just wish I was there already, there is nothing worse than a group of teachers sitting around with no one to teach!
Have brought the new Harry Potter book with me, might try and have a sneaky read later on in the lab, no one will find me in there! Rach and I are so sad, in bed last night by 20.50 and reading side by side, sitting up both with the new Potter, must have looked well sad.
This will be me on Saturday!Doh!
